Drinking last night messed up my morning!

Uncategorized Jun 27, 2019

The painful consequences of poor choices.

So last night we had some friends come over.

They own a pub so they often bring exotic or unusual beers.

I have been working on drinking minimally for the last couple of months.

We had people over Saturday night and I had 5 Peroni leggera.

I felt average for most of Sunday morning and recovered after planting about 12 trees on my property with my wife.

This was definitely a good outcome and significantly reduced the number of unplanted trees on the property…

And landscaping is HARD work.

I was sweating a lot!

Anyway, later that afternoon our friends came over.

They had helped out with loaning me a spare car when my starter motor blew up and I didn’t have a car for 3 days.

I had two of these special IPA type beers.

Then I had 4 red wine glasses.

The impact of this decision was fine last night.

The drinks tasted pretty good.

The buzz was fun.

Then the consequences kicked in.

  1. My sleep was impaired from the alcohol.
  2. I did not make the effort to ensure my phone, which is my alarm, was next to my bed.
  3. I did not ensure Pippa had warm enough pajamas.

Number 3 meant Pip showed up in our bed sometime during the night.

Now, like most 5-year-olds, she is not the greatest to be in the same bed with.

She often does full 180’s and sleeps with her head away from the pillow.

She will also often sleep on top of half the doona which means it pulls away from me, I get cold and wake up.

The overall impact of these consequences of drinking last night was major.

I was awake from somewhere around 2am to 4am.

I then slept through my alarm because my phone was in the other room and woke up at 6.15am.

This meant I missed my favorite workout - Monday morning VIPR session.

I was playing catchup all morning…

Yes, I still got my mediation in.

Yes, I still got a run in and jumped in the freezing pool for good measure.

Yes, I wrote a message thanking my wife for her cooking a great dinner for our friends.

But it was still relatively ineffective compared to what could have happened if I had not drunk alcohol yesterday.

I paid a heavy price for my decision.

What was the lesson I took from all of this?

My choices have impacts.

My choice to drink messed up my morning.

But here is the cool thing.

By looking at the outcome - which was poor - I can make a new decision next time.

My decision this time is to ensure that if I choose to drink, it is to enhance my experience and not cause chaos and destruction in my world.
